What You'll Find

If you're looking for one of the best views in Northern Ireland, Scrabo Tower should be high on your family adventure list.

The walk begins through peaceful woodland before opening up onto the dramatic hilltop where the iconic tower stands proudly overlooking Strangford Lough, Newtownards and the Ards Peninsula. It's a relatively short walk, making it perfect for families, although the final section is quite steep and will definitely get those little legs working!

Children love scrambling over the rocky paths, spotting butterflies, watching birds soar overhead and feeling like they're climbing towards a real-life castle.

The tower itself dates back to 1857 and was built as a memorial to Charles Stewart, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. Standing over 500 feet above sea level, it's one of Northern Ireland's most recognisable landmarks. On clear days you can enjoy breathtaking views stretching across Strangford Lough, the Mourne Mountains and even Scotland.

Don't forget your camera because every direction offers another incredible photo opportunity.

⭐ Wear trainers or walking shoes as some paths are uneven.

⭐ Bring a picnic to enjoy with one of Northern Ireland's best views.

⭐ On windy days it can be much colder at the top, so pack an extra layer.

⭐ If visiting with younger children, allow plenty of time for the climb as they'll want to stop and explore along the way.

⭐ Free parking for Scrabo Tower is available on-site via the main car park located off Scrabo Road, Newtownards (BT23 4SL). From this car park, you will face a steep but short 5 to 10-minute walk to reach the tower. Public toilets are available at this location.

Alternative parking can be found at the nearby Killynether Wood car park. However, starting from Killynether means you will have a longer 5km walk.
