What you’ll find

The biggest bonus of Groomsport for families is that you have a few different things to do all within the same area.

There’s a lovely sandy beach for paddling, digging and building sandcastles, with rocky sections that are great for a little bit of rock pooling when the tide is right.

Then you have the play area near the harbour, plenty of green space for the kids to run around and picnic areas overlooking the water.

You can also wander around Groomsport Harbour and see the little boats before visiting the historic Cockle Row Cottages nearby. It makes it really easy to turn what could just be a quick stop at the park into a good few hours out.

Groomsport Beach is also one of Northern Ireland's Inclusive Beaches, with the Mae Murray Foundation scheme helping people of different ages and abilities access and enjoy the beach. Specialist beach mobility equipment is available during operating periods but needs to be booked in advance.

For the grown ups

This is definitely one of those days out that's just as nice for the adults.

The views across Belfast Lough are beautiful, there are grassy areas where you can sit with a picnic while the kids play, and you're close enough to the village to grab something to eat or a coffee.

⭐️Check the tide before you visit if you're mainly coming for beach time.

⭐️Bring the buckets and spades — there are sandy and rocky areas to explore.

⭐️Pack a picnic and make a few hours of it.

⭐️Bring shoes suitable for exploring the rocks if your wee adventurers love rock pooling.

⭐️If you want to use the Inclusive Beach equipment, check availability and book this separately before travelling.

Overall verdict

Groomsport Beach & Park is a lovely FREE family day out in County Down and exactly the type of place we love adding to Wee Adventurers.

There's enough here to keep the kids entertained without it feeling like a big organised day out, play at the park, explore the beach, watch the boats, have a picnic and enjoy some fresh sea air.

Definitely one to save for those days when you just need to get everyone out of the house!
