If youâre looking for a family outing that mixes fun, fresh air, and a bit of history that even the kids will love, Derryâs City Walls are an absolute must.
Derry is the only completely walled city in Ireland. The walls were built in the early 1600s to keep the city safe, and theyâre still fully intact today. Which means⌠you can walk the whole way around them. Yep! A real life castle wall walk for the kids.
Itâs basically a giant, free, outdoor museum with a fantastic view and you donât need to be a history buff to enjoy it.
It is roughly 1.5 km all the way around. We did it in just over an hour at toddler pace, with plenty of stops for snacks, photos, and random questions. You will find, old cannons to climb on (safely!) Stunning views over the Bogside, Fountain, and River Foyle. Historic gates with names (Shipquay! Butcher! Bishopâs!) and lots of cobbled sections.
The walls are wide and well maintained with sturdy railings in most places. We pushed a buggy round it without bother.
Some bits have steps, but there are ramps too. Itâs doable with a pram if youâre willing to detour occasionally or take the odd lift (like at Foyleside Shopping Centre).
