What You’ll Find

Set at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, this is such a beautiful spot for a family adventure. Think winding forest trails, rivers, stepping stones, huge trees and bridges that look like they’ve come straight from a fairytale.

Tollymore is made for little adventurers.

There are miles of woodland to explore, but you don’t need to tackle a huge walk to enjoy it. We spent our time wandering through the forest, crossing bridges, exploring beside the river.

The bridges have to be one of my favourite things about Tollymore. Surrounded by towering trees with the river running underneath, parts of the forest genuinely feel like something from a storybook.

The Shimna River runs through the forest and adds so much to the adventure.

As always around water, keep little ones close and take extra care after wet weather when rocks and paths can be slippery.

One of the best things about Tollymore is that you can make the day as big or as small as you want. Come for a short wander and picnic with younger children, or choose one of the longer marked trails if your wee adventurers are happy to walk.

For the Grown Ups

This is definitely one of those days out that’s just as lovely for the grown ups.

The scenery is beautiful, there are plenty of photo opportunities and there’s something very peaceful about slowing down and wandering through the trees.

Why We Loved It

✅ Simple outdoor fun

✅No queues

✅No rushing

✅Beautiful surroundings and plenty of space for the kids to explore.

Wee Adventurer Top Tips

⭐️Wear proper shoes – paths can be muddy and uneven.

⭐️Bring layers – this is Northern Ireland after all!

⭐️Pack snacks or a picnic – exploring always seems to make kids instantly starving.

⭐️Bring spare clothes – particularly if your children are incapable of seeing water without investigating it.

⭐️Think about your buggy – some routes are much easier with little legs or an all-terrain buggy than others

Overall Verdict

Tollymore Forest Park gets a big Wee Adventurers YES from us.

It’s beautiful, inexpensive and gives children the freedom to do what they do best- explore.

If you’re looking for a slower family day out in County Down, add this one to your list.
